MarineOS runs on your boat's helm display, your iPhone, iPad and Mac, and in your browser at marineos.cloud. This page explains what information MarineOS keeps, where, and what you can do about it. In short: your boat's data is yours, we keep only what the features need, we don't sell it or use it for advertising, and you can delete it.
The chart, without an account
You can use the chart in your browser without an account. Nothing you do there is stored on our servers: routes and waypoints you make as a guest stay in your browser until you sign in to save them. To show places ashore and to search, your browser asks OpenStreetMap services directly (see Services we use).
Your account
When you create an account we keep your name, email address and a hashed password (we can't read it). We use your email to sign you in, to reset your password, to send invitations you ask us to send, and to tell you about your account or the service. No marketing email without your agreement.
Each account can hold boats and members. If you're invited to someone else's account, its owner can see your name and email address and your role there.
Your boats
When you pair a helm display or an app with a boat in your account, the boat sends MarineOS Cloud:
- Its position and track: where it is, with speed and course, kept as a position history (a point when it has moved about 25 m, or every five minutes) so you can see where it's been.
- Its readings and alarms: the latest depth, wind, engines, fuel, battery and other instruments, its active alarms and their history, and anchor watch.
- Its library: the routes, waypoints and tracks you sync between your devices.
- The device: a device identifier, its platform and MarineOS version, so it can be paired and offered the right software updates.
Everyone in the boat's account can see these. We use them to show you your boats and to run the features you use, and for nothing else. A display that isn't paired sends us nothing about the boat.
On your devices
Charts, routes, settings, forecasts you download and the boat's history are stored on the display or app itself and work without a connection. On your boat's network, a paired helm display shares its readings with your own phones and tablets directly, protected by a key only your paired devices have.
Services we use
Some features fetch public data from other services. They see the request and your device's internet address, as any website does, but not your account:
- NOAA (charts, weather forecasts, tides and currents) and the National Weather Service (marine forecasts and warnings): the area you ask about.
- OpenStreetMap services (Overpass, Photon and Nominatim): the chart area you're looking at, and what you type in the search box.
- US Army Corps of Engineers and the State of Michigan (inland charts and lake depths), when charts are downloaded.
To run MarineOS Cloud we use a hosting provider for our servers and storage and an email service to send account email; they handle data only for us. There is no advertising and no third-party analytics or tracking in MarineOS or MarineOS Cloud. We use cookies only to keep you signed in and to protect forms.
How long we keep it
We keep your account and your boats' data for as long as you have them with us. Removing a boat from your account deletes it with its position history, readings, alarms and library. Deleting your account (in Settings › Profile) deletes your sign-in and every account where you're the only member, with all its boats and their data; accounts you share with others stay with them. Server logs and backups are kept for a short time and then deleted.
Your choices
- See and edit your name and email in Settings, and your boats, routes, waypoints and tracks in MarineOS Cloud. Download a boat's library as GPX from its page.
- Remove a boat, leave an account, or delete your account at any time.
- Use MarineOS on board without an account at all: pairing with the Cloud is optional.
- Ask us for a copy of your data, or to correct or delete it, at the address below. Depending on where you live you may have further rights (for example under the GDPR or California law); we'll honour them.
Security
Connections to MarineOS Cloud are encrypted. Passwords are hashed, devices hold their own revocable keys, and software updates for helm displays are signed. No system is perfectly secure; if something goes wrong that affects your data, we'll tell you.
Children
MarineOS Cloud isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly keep their information.
Changes
If we change how we use your information we'll update this page and its date, and tell you by email first if the change is significant.
